Pediatric Dry Cough: Role of Nutrition in Effective Management

August 26, 2026 Dr. Sunil Agrawal 0 views

Pediatric dry cough should primarily be managed by identifying and addressing its underlying cause, with most acute cases associated with upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) requiring supportive care.[1][2]Antitussives may be considered when cough is persistent, distressing, or unexplained after aggravating factors have been addressed, whereas mucolytics, expectorants, antihistamines, and bronchodilators have roles in selected clinical conditions. Nutritional and supportive measures can complement management. A Mediterranean-style dietary pattern rich in fruits and vegetables has been associated with fewer respiratory symptoms, reduced respiratory infections, and improved pulmonary function in children.[3] Adequate hydration may support airway secretion clearance and mucosal function. Honey may provide symptomatic relief from acute cough in children older than 12 months and can soothe irritated throat mucosa.[4]
